Forever Off Lease
Upon the passing of my best friend
I was broken when you left,
Crushed and so alone.
There’ll be no more walks together,
No more happiness in our home.
The floors and hallways are silent,
The sound of your paws no longer around.
I can't even sit in our chair anymore,
There’s no comfort there to be found.
Your loyal eyes have vanished,
And that face I knew so well.
Your wagging tail of devotion,
No longer casts its spell.
My life has changed forever,
I‘m alone and incomplete.
How will I take a walk again,
Without you prancing at my feet?
Your dishes sit unused and empty,
Knowing they’ll never be filled again.
Your leash hangs lonely on its hook,
Knowing its walks have come to an end.
At night our bed is cold,
Your warmth gone from my side.
I wake each morning to your absence,
Together we no longer abide.
You gave me many gifts,
Companionship, joy and love.
No treasure will ever equal them,
Or, in this world, rise above.
We had our time in the sun,
Two lives lived as one.
Now, only memories remain,
And saddened gratefulness when they come.
But at least I know you’re happy,
In God’s garden of eternal play.
Because there you’ll be Forever Off Leash,
To run and jump another day.
